Underdog Owen

Hill City senior Devin Owen placed 6th place at the 2015 state tournament. This year, Owen went into the Cimarron Regional tournament with a losing record, and came out a regional champion.

“Well I was just really relaxed that match, by the end of the second period it was 12-1 and I saw him look at the scoreboard and just shake his head. That’s kind of when I knew it was over. I just kept doing my thing and I won. I just turned it around last week and I feel really confident this week,” Owen said.

However, that title didn’t come easy for Owen. Shortly into the season, Owen had to bring it to a halt temporarily.

“The first week or so of wrestling I found out, after puking a lot, that I had an ulcer in my stomach. And so, I came back from that and then ended up having surgery on my mouth. Well, I have a thing called impacted canines, and they had to go in and cut and insert chains in the top of my mouth. And I had my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time. So, I mean, I tried coming back from that probably too early and wasn’t wrestling good at all,” Owen said.

Today at the state tournament, Owen has managed to win his first two matches, and gives a lot of credit to his coach and fellow teammates.

“My wrestling partner, Gabe Hamel, this is the first year he wasn’t able to attend state. But, he definitely helped push me a lot. Coach had me wrestle everybody from our 106-pounder to our 182-pounders, so they all helped me.“

Owen faced off against Riley Tubbs, last year’s state runner-up, in the semifinals and ended up losing by fall. Owen will automatically place in the top 6th and will wrestle tomorrow in the consolation semifinals.
