JH Girls Go Up Againts Oakley Plainsmen

The Ellis Jr. High school girls basketball team played in the first round of the MCEL tournament against Oakley and came up winning the contest pushing Ellis to the next round.

The game was back and forth through the first half with Ellis down by one, 16 to17.  Ellis came back in the third quarter scoring five points to Oakley's two putting Ellis in the lead going into the fourth quarter 21 to 19.  In the final quarter of the game, Ellis' defense held strong keeping Oakley scoreless in the fourth quarter while adding another seven points which brought Ellis the win 28 to 19.

Coach Sheryl Butler commented, “Our girls did a fantastic job tonight.  They did everything we worked to do, keeping Oakley's big girls to minimal scoring, getting some rebounds and working as a team on offense to adjust to Oakley's defense.  The girls followed everything they were told to do and worked hard.”

Emily Eck was the lead scorer, scoring 10 points.  Lakyn Fischer, Maddy Guffy and Haley Schmidt each had six points.  Leading rebounder was Guffey with seven boards followed by Schmidt with four.  Fischer and Eck each had two rebounds and Hannah Schiel had one.  Ellis had a total of 16 rebounds to Oakley's 17 in spite of the height disadvantage the Ellis had.

The win of this first round brings Ellis in on Saturday to play the second round in the MCEL tournament against number one seed Phillipsburg who is undefeated.  The game starts at 9a.m. in the Plainville high school gym on Saturday Dec. 2, 2017.
