Junior High Girls Basketball vs Phillipsburg

The Ellis Jr. High girls basketball team competed in the second round of the MCEL tournament on Saturday Dec, 2nd against the undefeated, #1 seed Phillipsburg Panthers.  Ellis came out ready to play and made Phillipsburg take notice as the panthers only led by one at the first quarter.  Ellis' defense continued to do battle going into the half behind by five 12 to 17.  Ellis was already dealing with some foul issues going into the half.  The third quarter proved to be Phillipsburg turning point as they pulled ahead by the end of the third quarter 34 to 17.  Ellis continued to be plagued with fouls called with Maddy Guffy fouling out.  Ellis held Phillipsburg to only three points in the fourth quarter while the Railers added seven.  The final score ended up Phillipsburg 37 to Ellis 24.  Phillipsburg went to the free-throw line 25 times to Ellis' one trip to the line.  Phillipsburg scored 10 of their 13 point spread at the free-throw line.

Coach Sheryl Butler commented on the game, “The Ellis girls played hard.  We knew that this game, going against an undefeated, very good Phillipsburg team, was going to be a tough one.  We had a plan, which was to play tight on their leading scorer – which we did and she had a low scoring game for what she is used to.  We needed to do better on our offensive rebounds as we let a lot of those second scoring opportunities go.  We also had a lot of frustration with our foul situation in having one player foul out and four others in some foul trouble.  The girls did a good job against a very good team that has been beating everybody in the league by an average of 19 points.”

Leading scorer for Ellis was Lakyn Fischer with 10 points.  Emily Eck, Haley Schmidt and Michelle Gottschalk each had four and Treynce Boyce added two.  Leading rebounder for Ellis was Schmidt with seven followed by Fischer with five and Eck with four.  Boyce added two boards and Hannah Schiel and Gottschalk each had one.

The Ellis varsity gets a break until December 14th at home against the Stockton Tigers.  The Ellis J.V. will play in the J.V. tournament in Phillipsburg on Saturday Dec. 9th.
