JH Girls Basketball at P-Burg

The Ellis Jr. High girls basketball team traveled to Phillipsburg on November 2nd. The varsity lost to Phillipsburg as Ellis struggled to get a shot to fall in the first half. The second half Ellis was finally able to put more points on the board but it was too tough to come back. Final score of the game was Ellis 22 to Phillipsburg 42.

“Phillipsburg came out in a tough full-court press that we struggled with. We kept going right into their traps which is what we work to not do – which resulted in turnovers and easy baskets for P-burg. Once we got onto our end of the court, we actually ran our offense very well, but we could not buy a bucket I am estimating that we shot less than 15%. We were also out-rebounded our 25 boards vs. their 41. We will be working hard on our own pressure and press break so that we can fix some problem areas. P-burg has a great team this year and it was helpful for me to see what we need to fix and get better at before we possibly meet them again for tournament.” - Head Coach Sheryl Butler

Emily Eck was the leading scorer with 17 points. She got most of them, including three 3-pointers, in the second half. Lakyn Fischer was the only other scorer with 5. Leading rebounder was Maddy Guffey with 10. Fischer followed with 6, Haley Schmidt had 5 and Trenyce Boyce and Michelle Gottschalk each had 2.

In the J.V. contest, Ellis came out on top, winning the game 25-9. The second half produced the most points for Ellis as they only led by five points at the half.  Leading scorers were Gottschalk and Schiel each with 10 points. Natalie Schumacher contributed 5 points. Leading rebounders were Makenna Kohl, Madison Gottschalk and Schumacher all with 7 boards each. Harlie Bittel had 6 rebounds and Schiel had 4.
