Class Guidelines

  1. I expect to be addressed as Mr. Kohl.

  1. I will do everything I can to see that you pass this class.  The following are your responsibilities.

  1. First, BE HERE and BE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT!  This will be the biggest reason for failure in my classes.  Points will periodically be awarded for class participation.

  1. Second TURN IN YOUR ASSIGNMENTS!!!  Assignments are due when the BELL RINGS!  This is the second biggest reason for failure.  Use the following guidelines:

    1. If you have an assignment and you are absent the day it is due, it must be turned in upon your return.

**Exception:  If the absence is scheduled (prior knowledge of), the student must turn in the assignment prior in order to avoid the late penalty (10% per day).

**Please let me know when you will not be in class and get the assignment.

(Appropriate time to request assignment:  Before school, after school, lunch)

    1. If not given the assignment ahead of time, you will have the same amount of time to complete the assignment as the rest of the class.

    1. Assignments will not be accepted past 7 days after the due date unless otherwise specified.  (Assignments will be penalized 10% for everyday late)

**Due dates will be listed on the board.

    1. It is your responsibility to see me about missed assignments.  Please do so prior to the absence if at all possible.  (Please do this outside of class – before school, after school, lunch period, etc. . .)

    1. Test make-ups are to be made up as soon as possible.  If you are here for the review, you will be expected to take the test the next day you are in class.  If you know about the test ahead of time, you will be expected to take the test whether you were here for the review or not.  NO EXCEPTIONS!!!  Tests taken after the original test date will be in an altered format (essay test).

**Bottom line -  BE HERE FOR THE REVIEWS!

**If the student is not present for my class period on the day of the test but is in school, he or she is expected to take the test before/after school or during lunch.

    1. Always make-up missed notes from lectures either by copying them from another student or I can go back over the class discussion with you before or after school.  You will not be told to do this, you will be EXPECTED to have them the next time you come to class.  Students are expected to have their own notes for the test review.  If you borrow someone’s notes for the test review, you and that person will receive a zero.

    1. Students will be expected to read all directions on tests.  Answers to essay questions should not contain any abbreviations and should be answered in complete sentences.  Correct spelling is graded on tests.

    1. Graphic Organizers:  Graphic organizers are required to be filled out over each section of the chapter prior to class discussion.  Students may be asked to hand them in at any time.  Students should NOT use their notes to fill out the graphic organizers, copy straight from the textbook, or attempt to fill in the graphic organizer with information not contained in the textbook.  Use of any of the previously mentioned will result in a zero for the entire chapter(s) of graphic organizers.

  1. Course grade will be determined on a point system.  Test scores will count for approximately 60% of your grade and daily scores will account for approximately 40% of your grade.

  1. Question of the Day:  Each day a question will appear on the board next to the class name accompanied by chapter and section.  Each student is expected to work on finding the answer once the bell starts class.  These questions should be copied on a separate sheet of paper and answered with the date the question was issued.  These should be done on your own.  Cheating results in a zero for both students.  If you have a question, please ask me.  Questions will be turned in at the end of each chapter.

  1. Required Material:  Each student is required to bring a notebook, paper, text book, black or blue pen or pencil and 3 ring binder.  (No exceptions on pen color.  Assignments done in any other color will not be accepted!  This includes tests.)  Failure to bring required material to class will result in a 10 minute detention served with me before or after school.

  1. Tardy:  (Definition:  In the door before the bell rings without being disruptive)  Unexcused tardies will be reported to the office.

  1. Profanity, sexual references, negative comments, and punching will result in time after school with me or a referral to the office.

  1. Time will be given in class for most assignments.  No working on other assignments while other activities are taking place in class and no sleeping during videos, discussion, etc. . . A “0” for the day will result and time owed after school.

  1. Students are expected to be ACTIVE LEARNERS in my classes.  This means that each student will be expected to answer questions, ask questions, discuss events, complete classroom work and take notes.  Students are required to take notes and notes may be graded at any time.  If a student fails to complete assignments, he/she will be issued an 8th hour detention.

  1. Cheating (in or out of class) will not be tolerated and result in a loss of points (0%).  This includes plagiarism.

  1. No extra credit (Some extra credit assignments will be given throughout the year)

  1. Other classroom rules:
    1. No talking when the teacher or another student has the floor.  If you have a question, please raise your hand.
    2. No pop, gum, i-pods, food, or health/beauty products allowed in the classroom.
    3. Do not mark on desks, books, or bulletin boards.
    4. Stay in seats at all times.
    5. No leaving the room for restroom, phone calls, locker, etc. . . after class begins unless it is an emergency situation.

  1. Assignment portfolio:  Students are responsible for keeping all graded assignments in a 3 ring binder which will be handed in for a grade at the end of each 9 weeks.

  1. If you need to see me about grades, make-up work, etc. . . . the best time to see me is before school, after school, during the lunch hour, or during my planning period.  If possible, please set up a time to meet with me.

  1. REASONS FOR CLASSROOM DETENTIONS:

c.        Assignments, books, or other material left in the classroom.
